Jesus Club Update | August 2021
In July, the Jesus Club at Serangoon held its annual volunteer training at Bukit Arang Church. The training session focused on equipping volunteers in two areas: (1) how to teach concrete learners more effectively, and (2) how to respond calmly and safely when facing aggressive behaviour.
During the session, we learnt that we should communicate appropriately based on the level of comprehension of our friends with intellectual disabilities. At the abstract level, one can understand more complex concepts communicated mainly through words. At the symbol level, one can understand with the help of representative signs paired together with words. At the concrete level, one can understand as they participate hands-on with real-life visuals or objects.
Our trainer showed us many different task types we could design to help our group members grasp the key idea of the bible talk. We were also reminded to speak slower, keep our sentences simple, and make abstract ideas concrete.
We also learnt that sticking to a structured schedule with clear boundaries can help our friends with intellectual disabilities, especially those with autism, to feel more comfortable and calmer at our meetings. At times when they may feel overwhelmed by sensory or other triggers, we may need to help them move to a quieter place to calm down before talking with them. We pray that our volunteers and members would grow deeper in mutual understanding and learning, loving one another as Jesus’ disciples.
A big thank you to our current and previous volunteers (Jesca, Yvonne, Yafen, Brian) who contributed to training materials and shared with us from their professional experiences.
The Serangoon club also farewelled Pastor Mike Yeong, who has been a valuable member of their core leadership team. We are delighted that he is moving into another area of ministry which serves the special needs community in Singapore. Please keep him in your prayers too!
